Poppy Hills architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. dove into the progress of the renovation on the back nine, which is full of tributes to other architects.
“There are a lot of echoes of other architects here,” Jones said. “No. 15 is a little C.B. Macdonald. We are doing a Redan hole. The 10th hole has a new green and is a little tip of the hat to Donald Ross, because he liked crowned greens. The new 11th will be a tip of the hat to MacKenzie with complex, interesting bunker surrounds, and the green pitched back to front like he liked to do.
“And of course, my dad’s all over the place because he taught me.”
Jones is also very fond of No. 12.
“She’s going to be a princess,” he said. “She’s extremely beautiful, straight at the Monterey Bay. If you have really sharp eagle eyes, maybe you’ll see Pasatiempo.”
