No. 11 is the only brand new hole during the Poppy Hills renovation, and in the first two weeks of July, it has really come to life. The new par 3, which shouldn’t play longer than 150 yards, is nestled between the Gowen Cypress to the right and a sloping hillside on the left.
“This beautiful new hole is keeping with the small, little devilish holes that come about on all great golf courses when you least expect them,” said Robert Trent Jones Jr. “The green is long and thin and set against a slope. There is a strong bunker in front, and a series of bunkers right.”
The new tee box is near the old 11th green, and plays toward the former 12th fairway.
“From the tee there is a sense of mystery on this hole,” Jones said. “You can’t see the entire green. The green is deep – about 110 feet deep – and it’s narrow – about 45 feet wide – and it’s going to require great precision, even though it’s only 140-150 yards from the back tees.”
